本展簡介

Introduction

吳寬墩 2018 皺摺

此次「生命的皺褶-吳寬墩醫師個展」總共展出「文明的皺褶」、「大地的皺褶」、「歷史的皺褶」、以及「自由的皺褶」等四大主題,每一主題皆是生命的皺褶在不同尺度與面向上的展開。

就展覽形式言,除了每個展區同時展示吳寬墩醫師之畫作外,本策展團隊將結合現代舞蹈及藝術家訪談,拍攝製作一支展覽主題影片及預告片。策展人將結合其影像導演的專業,以藝術跨域的形式針對本次展覽主題做影像的詮釋與回應,於展場及線上同步播出。

 

The solo exhibition “The Folds of Life – Dr. Wu Kuan-Dun” features four major thematic sections: “Folds of Civilization,” “Folds of the Earth,” “Folds of History,” and “Folds of Freedom.” Each theme unfolds the concept of life’s folds from different scales and perspectives.

In terms of exhibition format, each section will showcase paintings by Dr. Wu Kuan-Dun. In addition, the curatorial team will produce a thematic film and a trailer for the exhibition, incorporating elements of modern dance and interviews. Drawing on the curator’s expertise in film direction, the video will serve as an interdisciplinary artistic interpretation and response to the exhibition’s core themes, and will be presented both on-site and online simultaneously.

有人說,這場瘟疫似乎讓人類文明的前進重重踩下了煞車,隨地可見的口罩或許擋住了病毒卻也成了環境難以消滅的病毒。但也有人認為,疫情讓過急的文明有緩步迂迴的空間,甚至在後疫情時代的新科技思維創造了元宇宙、NFT……等前所未有的新風景。

於是我們不禁要問:在這場疫情之後,風景是否仍是風景?文明是否依舊文明?

 

Some say that this pandemic seems to have forced human civilization to slam on the brakes, with the omnipresent masks perhaps blocking the virus but also becoming a virus that the environment struggles to eliminate. Others, however, believe that the pandemic has provided space for a civilization, previously rushing forward, to slow down and take a more meandering path. In fact, the new technological thinking in the post-pandemic era has created unprecedented landscapes such as the Metaverse and NFTs.

Thus, we cannot help but ask: After this pandemic, is a landscape still a landscape? Is civilization still civilization?

曾有人類學家將迄今的地球歷史壓縮為一天,人類在晚上 11 時 58 分 43 秒出現。關於這藍色星球上山川海天萬物的記憶,歷經億萬年的堆疊層積消融崩解,似乎已有運行的秩序,卻在最後這兩分鐘內遇上人類後進入複雜難解的混沌狀態。

2014 年吳醫師曾於嘉義市文化局以「土地與人情」為題,展出其透過聽診器聆聽土地正義後之沈思,他曾說:「人因為土地的滋養而茁壯和偉大,人的歡樂和悲傷也都是發生在這塊土地上。人應該回饋這片土地。」在此次展覽中,吳醫師再將聽診器從人民對土地正義的吶喊,轉向更根本,大地對人類足跡的沈吟。在這些空無一人的畫作中,人類對大地的索求成就了,或者說,迴向了大地的皺褶。

 

An anthropologist once compressed the entire history of Earth into a single day, with humanity appearing at 11:58:43 PM. The memories of mountains, rivers, seas, skies, and all living things on this blue planet have accumulated, eroded, and dissolved over billions of years, seemingly forming an order of operation. Yet, in the final two minutes, after the emergence of humans, this order has plunged into a complex, chaotic state.

In 2014, Dr. Wu held an exhibition titled “Land and Humanity” at the Chiayi City Cultural Bureau, reflecting on the justice of the land through the lens of his stethoscope. He said, “Humans thrive and become great because of the nourishment of the land, and both human joy and sorrow occur on this land. People should give back to this land.” In this exhibition, Dr. Wu shifts the focus of his stethoscope from the cries of the people for land justice to a more fundamental question: the Earth’s contemplation of humanity’s footprints. In these works, where humans are absent, the demands humans place on the Earth have either shaped or, perhaps, returned to the folds of the Earth itself.

科技文明隨時代的推演不斷前進著。而當自詡「進步文化」、以所信仰的「演化」為名進行武力、經濟、及甚至文化殖民之實,我們站在時間之鏡前,看著歷史不斷重複相疊上演著。在每個相疊的皺褶之間,我們是否仍將演化當作信仰?有學聰明了點?還是總自以為聰明地,閉著眼將歷史的鏡子朝向睜開眼的人們?

 

Technological civilization continuously advances through the progression of time. However, when self-proclaimed “progressive cultures,” under the banner of their belief in “evolution,” carry out military, economic, and even cultural colonization, we stand before the mirror of time, witnessing history repeatedly unfold and overlap. In each of these overlapping wrinkles, do we still regard evolution as a belief? Have we become wiser, or do we, in our self-assumed wisdom, blindly direct the mirror of history toward those who open their eyes?

自由是什麼?當記憶成為揮之不去的夢靨,為了爭取自由而失去自由甚至奉獻生命的靈魂成了時代的皺褶時,我們要如何撫平內心的傷痕?才能擺脫夢魘的枷鎖,成為真正的自由人?

從吳醫師透過〈1955.9.29〉畫作,紀念因白色恐怖被槍決舅舅的受難日開始,便思考著在伸張「轉型正義」與揭露「歷史真相」的同時,要怎樣透過藝術來尋求靈魂的平靜?

此外,吳醫師透過兩幅自畫像-2018 年的〈皺褶〉與 2022 最新作〈框架〉,嘗試為本展作最後的提問與答辯:經歷這麼多年對「自由」定義的挖掘與反思後,我們如何從大夢初醒的慣性中,找到突破框架的途徑?這途徑透過一位醫者的藝術創作而言或許是條鮮少人跡的林中小路,但在創作者的內心,似已飛越樹梢,尋見框架外的和諧與自由。

 

What is freedom? When memory becomes an inescapable nightmare, and souls that fought for freedom — even sacrificing their lives — become the fold of an era, how do we heal the scars within? How can we break free from the chains of nightmare and become truly free?

Starting with Dr. Wu’s painting 1955.9.29, which commemorates the day his uncle was executed during the White Terror, Dr. Wu began contemplating how to seek peace for the soul through art while promoting “transitional justice” and uncovering “historical truths.”

Additionally, through two self-portraits — The Fold (2018) and The Frames (2022) — Dr. Wu attempts to pose the final question and response for this exhibition: After years of delving into and reflecting on the definition of “freedom,” how can we break free from the inertia of a dream-like state and find a path to transcend the frame? Through the artistic creation of a physician, this path may seem like a seldom-trodden path through the forest, but within the creator’s heart, it has already soared above the treetops, finding harmony and freedom beyond the frame.
